Txillida Leku

This wednesday we went to San Sebastian or Donostia with bus through the mountains. Before arriving at the city we had a short stop at a museum called Chillida Leku. The artist called Chillida was born in San Sebastian and is considered as the most important artist in the Basque country because of his sculptures.

At the museum the guide showed us some sculptures made of granite, alabaster and metal. Most of the artwork is located in the garden but there was also some in the farmhouse aswell. The guide told us about history behind the sculpture and the artist Chillida. We thought that the art was very interesting but a little bit weird because it had a deep meaning that was hard to understand. One of the sculptures made of granite looks like it was made of two parts and the artist made it as an illusion because it was only one stone. Chillida had been a goalkeeper in his youth and he made a metal sculpture which shows that kind of mindset.

After the museum we went to Donostia. It started pouring right after we got of the bus, besides that, it was very windy. However, we thought that it is very beautiful in the city, especially the beach and the waves. All the students had free time so we split up in different groups. Some of us went shopping and others went to eat. Most of the spanish students had lunch at Mcdonalds but others tried traditional spanish food like pinchos. The food was cheap and tasty. Before we ate, a group of students went to a supermarket to buy food and souvenirs.
All in all, we had a great time and enjoyed the trip.

Trip to the museum of “Chillida Leku” and Donostia

Anton (Sweden) , Anna (Austria) , Lotte (the Netherlands), Agata (Poland), Amaia (Spain)
First we went to Chillida Leku by bus. The museum gives information about Eduardo Chillida, an artist from Spain, and shows his sculptures and drawings. It is an open air museum and there is a farmhouse with his works. You can walk around and see his sculptures and the nature around it. We were shown around by a guide who gave us more information about his private life and his thoughts on his art. We all think that the museum was boring and not really interesting. It was raining the whole day.
After that we went to the centre of Donostia. We had four hours of free time, but because of the rain, we did not see much of the city. We spent a lot of our time with our hosts and friends inside restaurants eating pinchos, the basque word for tapas. Some of us were also at McDonalds. We were walking around, taking some pictures
of the beach and the buildings and we were having fun.
At 4 p.m. we came back to Bilbao and went bowling. It was a lot of fun because we got to know each other better. After that we all went home and had dinner with our host families. The day was fun but very exhausting.

CHILLIDA LEKU AND DONOSTI

Trip to Donostia

Yesterday we went on a trip to Donostia by bus. The busride took around one and a half hours and we departed at 8:30.The weather was really bad because it was raining almost the whole trip. First we went to an art museum about Chillida’s sculptures. Chillida was a Basque artist from Donostia. He was an architect from the beginning and then he wanted to become an artist. His sculptures focused on the human form whilst his later sculptures were more focused on abstract and massive work.  We got to see a lot of sculptures outside and then other art inside a house. No one really liked it because we thought we were going to look at typical Basque art but it was not that case. And the rain made it a bit more boring as well.
The tour took an hour and after that we went on the bus to go Donostia to have some free time. Firstly we walked along the beach and after that some of us separated from the group to take a look in town. For example the Austrians ate some pintxos which they really enjoyed. Some of the Swedish people also took a look around the town and then ate some pintxos. The Spanish and Polish students also took a look around the town and then they ate at McDonalds. The Dutch visited a cathedral and they thought it was really beautiful. We all think that Donostia is a very beautiful city with the architecture and the big beach. The combination with city and beach looks very nice. In town, we had the chance to experience some of the Basque food traditions which is pintxos. There are many pintxos bars in the parts of the Old Town so for the ones eating pintxos it was hard to choose which bar to go to.
The weather during the trip was quite confusing. First when we arrived at Donostia, it was a bit stormy because it was raining and blowing very much so it was not really very comfortable at first. Then after a while the sun came out and it suddenly became really warm.
In conclusion, everyone really  enjoyed the trip because Donostia is a very beautiful city with an adorable beach and many pintxos bars. Although all of us found the museum a bit boring, we still enjoyed the trip at the end.
